Bike Touring: Decending Big Sur on Pacific Coast Highway

Big Sur

June 30: Big Sur

Just a quick snapshot from my camp for the evening.

Pacific Coast Near San Simeon, California

June 29: Pacific Coast Near San Simeon, California

Sure it looks pretty but there were some nasty winds out of the North, and I was going the wrong way for this time of year.

Where is Chip?

For those of you who get these updates in your email and want to keep up with where I am, I’m now makingĀ  updates through Twitter throughout the day. The cool thing about the twitter updates is that you can get them through twitter, but they also post directly to my facebook page, and on the right hand sidebar of the blog itself. Find the way that works best for you and follow along!

(Oh, by the way, I’m in Santa Cruz Sunday evening, headed to Half Moon Bay Monday, and then Oakland on Tuesday.)

Bridge in Fog | Pacific Coast Highway, California

June 28: Bridge in Fog

There are dozens of these bridges through Big Sur, most of them were built in the early 1930s. Beautiful any time, but especially in the early morning when the marine layer makes them just a little creepy.

June 27: Somewhere, There is an Ocean

Early morning along the PCH This was part way up a couple of BIG climbs along the coast through Big Sur. The views here are beautiful once the marine layer burns off, but the fog kept my camera in its bag and my feet on the pedals which I needed for a 60 mile day with LOTS of elevation.

San Louis Obispo

June 26: San Louis Obispo

No, I’m not still there, I just like this picture. I’ll post some stuff from along the coast soon.

Morro Bay

June 25: Morro Bay

I’ve always loved Morro Bay. I woke up in a Eucalyptus Grove in the State Park here and went for a little ride down by the Marina before heading out for the day.

June 24: Things I Don’t Need to be Told

When you are making your way up a long twisty road with too many miles between you and Morro Bay, and not quite enough light to get there, the last thing you need is some stupid sign restating the obvious. Thanks Mr. Sign!

Wait Here

Wait here Big Jim! Good bike.

Covered the 80 miles from Sant…

Covered the 80 miles from Santa Barbara to Santa Maria over hills and into headwinds yesterday. 200 miles away from eagle rock now.

Chip, Jim, and Duke

June 21: Old Days
Pastor Jim Schettler was my youth pastor in Pensacola in the 1980s. How cool to run in to him and his family in Santa Maria this past Sunday.

Harris Grade Road

Roads with the word “grade” in their name should probably not be attempted after riding 60+ miles of hills, highways, and headwinds while pushing 100 pounds of bike and gear. The feeling at the top and coming down the other side is worth it though. I take back what I said the other day about this being a joyride. It is a challenge, and not one that just anyone could do. i am fortunate enough to have freedom, health, endurance, strength of body and will, and just enough fukitol to give it a shot.

After the long grind up and the fast decent a small group of carbon fiber road bikes zipped passed on the other side of the road “Hey how is the hill?” asked the woman at the front of the pack. I smiled thinking about how different my perspective and hers must be at this point in the day. “Its a little steep, but all good.” I yelled back, and their group zipped onward towards the fun while I turned onto the 135 and headed north into the wind.
